Parent Corner

I have broken the Parent Corner down into the sections below. This should make it easier to find what you're looking for. Be sure to visit this page again as the year goes on. I will be adding more detailed information on projects closer to the date the assignments are given.

| Homework | Roving Reporter | Spelling | What Are Longebucks? |

Birthday Treats:
We have 21 students this year. If you choose to send in birthday treats, please send in all necessary supplies. I do not keep anything at school to cut something into servings. Please be aware that sharp objects may not ride on the bus with your child. The number of students is always subject to change, so please supply extras. Please let me know if your child has any food allergies.

Book Reports:
One book report is assigned per marking period. They are always fun and not greatly overwhelming. They reinforce the importance of reading and the projects certainly make it more fun. You will get more information as they come up throughout the year. The books come from the school library and I provide the topic.

Discipline:
Generally, a discussion with your child is enough to remedy the situation. We will discuss the problem, find a solution, discuss problem-solving strategies, and what can be done so that it does not happen again. We look for ways to continually grow and learn.

In the classroom, I also use a discipline plan with a card system. I have found it to be quick and effective. If a student is breaking the classroom rules, he or she will be asked to pull a card. This is simply a warning. If the student continues the off task or disruptive behavior they will be forced to pull a second card. Pulling the second card represents a loss of seven minutes of recess. If a student pulls the third card, he or she loses all of recess. If the behavior continues and I must address the student again, a note is written to you.

Handwriting:
The students are required to write all Spelling assignments in cursive. Each student will be given a sheet of the correct formation of the cursive letters. Pencils are required for all written assignments, and ink pens are not permitted. On every assignment, a correct heading is required. The students will receive a copy of this as well.

Homework:
Students are responsible to return homework on time. This is an opportunity for students to work independently on the day's lesson and practice learned skills. Homework is assigned Monday through Friday evenings. The students will have roughly two to three assignments each night.

Your student's job is to write down the assignments exactly as they are written on the board. I ask that you look over the agenda each night, make sure your child has completed the homework and placed it back in the homework folder to return to school on time. Please sign or initial the space at the bottom of that day's column. It is then your student's job to turn in the assignment in the morning.
    Homework Tidbits
  1. Students receive 5 points for every completed assignment turned in on time.
  2. Students receive a 0 for any incomplete or missing assignments.
  3. To instill responsibility, the students will work during recess to complete an incomplete or missing assignment and receive 2.5 points for the assignment.
  4. If an assignment is complete but left at home, the student receives a 0 until it is turned in at which point the grade earned is still 2.5 points.

Please visit The Daily Blog for more information.

Spelling:
On the first day of the week, students will take a pretest. Students only use the words they did not spell correctly to create their own unique spelling list. (It is redundant to have a child study a word he or she can already spell!) Students then fill in any empty slots on their spelling list by choosing words from a "Challenge" list. Once their spelling list is set, they copy it down in their agenda and raise their hand so that I can double-check to make sure they have copied it down correctly.

On the last day of the week, students will have a partner administer their spelling test. I supervise to make sure that students are administering the assessment properly. The tests will be returned early the following week.

What Are Longebucks?
Longebucks are a form of ticket used to promote class participation and group sharing. When students raise their hand and are called upon, they receive a Longebuck (whether they provide a correct response or not). The goal is to have many students attempting to answer every question, rather than just three or four responding. Students can then purchase a piece of candy for 15 Longebucks or a no homework pass for 40. You can download the Longebucks by clicking here.
